Aside from the sheer awkwardness role call brings for trans students, I can't help but also think of attendance policies as a whole as ableist, especially the way some professors essentially gamify attendance and how K-12 truancy policies seem to have a way of hurting exactly who they're meant to protect. On the whole, it would behoove society to replace the punitive nature of taking attendance with connections to social service initiatives meant to maximize the benefit of education.
