In Defense of iPad Kids
It’s all about universal design.
Eek, screen time!
As a Zillenial, I was born right as an onslaught of very convenient digital technology completely transformed how a huge portion of the world conducts affairs. From the time I was somewhere between four and five years old, when I first learned to plunk out a few words into the Google search bar until I got my first iPhone at 14, I witnessed a meteoric rise of fear and disdain toward the idea of mixing kids and much of 21st century direct-to-consumer technology. These days, if some people had their way, people 0–18 would live under a rock. In other words, limiting screen time (or completely avoiding it altogether) has become practically the best thing since sliced bread and recent legal developments continue with to mirror this sentiment.
To be fair, there does exist evidence suggesting multiple downsides in providing kids access to some of our more recent pastimes, such as social media and iPads, and there are a lot of downright nasty ways that some folks have utilized newer computational devices to perpetrate some undeniably horrific acts against kids, but I think that just like any tool out there, the outcome of using said tool really depends how one uses the tool and weighing risk versus benefit.
