I've started to realize that overall, our healthcare system likes it when it can frame things as a "single issue". Research follows this pattern as well. Lots of studies exclude people without "pure" diagnoses. We are barely starting to scratch the surface of the idea of "multimorbidity" even thought this appears to be the rule rather than the exception. I've started to cynically wonder whether the aforementioned kind of compartmentalization and lack of intersectionality are the result of some kind of evolved cognitive blindspot affecting the way we conduct empirical research.
