Schools in the US really need to learn a lesson here. They're so concerned with covering their own asses and fear mongering that they can't look beyond their own dollar signs when a child dares *gasp* get up and leave the classroom for a few minutes without getting permission from someone further up in the hierarchy.
Throughout elementary school especially, I frequently committed the "crimes" of using the bathroom, going to the nurse's office, and/or taking a stroll around campus without telling my teachers first and those teachers saw me as little more than a walking liability.
I have seen similar trends only blossom and proliferate since I have become an adult and other adults somehow can't fathom that the vast majority of kids, disabled or not, aren't meant to be surveilled 24/7.
