The issue with true helicoptering is the long-term, which humans are frequently bad at fully stepping into and envisioning. For a very slight increase in safety from strangers (yes, slight, because most kids are abused/abducted by someone they know), you get issues like people of average college age having never operated a washing machine, taken a bus, or communicated directly with their doctor or instructor, suddenly finding themselves ill-equipped with life skills and with lots of self-esteem and anxiety issues.
