The only way I ended up getting this talk was because I took a Language in Law class during undergrad and our professor had years of experience as a courtroom interpreter, as well as invited all of her lawyer friends to come in and talk about their jobs. We spent a ton of time on Miranda rights. She ended up drilling in that “give me a lawyer” was the right script because of how many times she’d seen people saying anything else still get brutally interrogated, especially as time went on. That class was also where I learned many other horrors of the US legal system, that even my Black mother didn’t know already, and decided that I did not want to become a lawyer. I ended up taking so many things back to my parents instead of the other way around.
