There shouldn't be a big chat, nor should it be considered something only parents get to tell their kids. I'm so grateful my parents embraced me not believing in Santa from the beginning and telling other kids like it is. I’ve sadly learned how unpopular this stance is with a lot of folks.

Norms like this are part of why most kids learn so little critical thinking and probably a big part of why stuff like flat earth theory is even a thing. Next thing you know, you have people believing a certain US presidential candidate when he claimed a certain immigrant population somewhere was eating people’s pets.

As a society, we've got to normalize sharing accurate information and questioning your and others' beliefs and sources of information, even if said source is your parents or some other authority figure, and not tying fundamental parts of personal identity to sensational group fictions and capitalist illusions designed to take more of your money.
